City of Blue Earth issued the following announcement on Oct. 30.
The Blue Earth Police Department wanted to put out a quick message regarding scam calls taking place locally in the last few days. Citizens have been getting calls being told that bank accounts have been opened in their name using their social security number. During these calls they're being asked to provide their full social security number in order to verify their identity.
Someone who claims to know your identity has been used to open a bank account should not need to ask you questions about your full name, date of birth, or you full social security number.
These callers will often have strong accents and will often know very few details about you in the beginning of the call. They often work for vague but important sounding offices or will say something like, "I am calling you today, sir, on behalf of your banking institute..." They are hoping you will then assume they work for your bank without having to know which one it is.
Please remind friends and family about how these scams in general work but also spread the word about this current one that has been appearing around town.
