A bill termed the "Give It Back Act" was introduced by Rep. Jeremy Munson, which would see over $4 billion budget surplus returned to Minnesota taxpayers by October.
According to the bill, every single taxpayer will receive a $1,000 check and $2,000 for joint filers, according to Action 4 Liberty. The bill has received tremendous support from other lawmakers, such as Rep. Cal Bahr.
Out of the $4 billion, $1.5 billion accounts for budgetary balance, while $2.4 billion comes from the reserve account.
Munson made a statement to show why the bill is necessary, according to Action 4 Liberty.
“Last year, the Minnesota legislature fully funded our state government for two years,” Munson said. “So we do not need to spend a dime of the surplus on more government. That’s why we want the taxpayers to get that money back as soon as possible.”
He said he wants families to have the money to spend on things that are important to them, as it is their money in the first place.
“The government is taking money out of the private sector and holding onto it in cash for some rainy day,” Munson said. “In other words, there’s $2.4 billion not in our economy, waiting for a day to be spent on more government. That’s wrong. All Republicans should be united on giving that back.”
The Give It Back Act has received support from lawmakers and Minnesotans who have signed a petition to push a tax refund from the budget surplus.
