In the age of coronavirus, there are two types of businesses: essential and non-essential.

The theatrical supply and costume rental company Laura Lehner worked for fell under the non-essential category. Because shows were either postponed or cancelled in light of Gov. Tim Walz’ executive order banning all non-essential work and activities, the business saw its clientele and revenue disappear. Lehner, a Le Sueur resident, was then laid off from her managerial position.

“Watching the company that you’ve worked for 30 years shutting down was one of the most moving experiences,” Lehner told the Le Sueur County News.

Curt Wigham, owner of the Express Employment staffing agency in Owatonna, said COVID-19’s impact forced many businesses to indefinitely halt hiring.

“I think a lot of companies don’t want to bring people into their work environments yet until this has settled down,” Wigham said.
