State Sen. John Jasinski believes the decision to reopen this fall should ultimately be left up to the schools.
School districts across Minnesota are waiting for Gov. Tim Walz to make an announcement on his plans for how Gopher State children will receive an education.
Jasinski, however, demands the governor allow the school districts to come up with their own plans.
“For one thing, the COVID pandemic has impacted the metro area far, far differently than Greater Minnesota,” the lawmaker said on the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus’s website. “For another, it may not be possible for dense school districts in Minneapolis, for example, to open safely; but smaller schools in rural areas certainly won’t have that same issue.”
Citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield and the American Academy of Pediatrics, Jasinski asserted that students returning to classrooms for the first time since March is the best thing to do.
He added that children are less likely to contract COVID-19 or even spread it to others.
