Gov. Tim Walz said that the state has made a decision on how schools will reopen but it appeared only a handful of people were satisfied.
The governor said that schools will have "some flexibility" when they reopen. However, he says schools will reopen based on the number of COVID cases in their communities. In a recent press conference, Walz said, “not all schools look the same, not all parts of the state look the same, and we need to take those into consideration.”
Sen. John Jasinski said Republicans say the districts themselves should decide how their schools reopen, according to the Minnesota Senate Republican Caucus.
"This is exactly the point that myself and many others have been making for weeks as we recommended letting individual districts take the lead," Jasinski said. "It was even the subject of my most recent column 'Let schools decide to reopen.'”
Jasinski wrote that each district in the state has very different needs.
"The needs of students in places like Waseca are much different than the needs of students in Minneapolis," Jasinski said. "So is the status of the outbreak. While the governor’s announcement was encouraging at first glance, in reality his guidance muddied the waters even more than they were before."
