Minnesota State Representative Erica Schwartz has issued a message to constituents ahead of Independence Day, highlighting both the historical significance of the holiday and recent changes in state law.
Schwartz reflected on the meaning of July 4th, stating, "Two hundred and forty-nine years ago, courageous leaders came together to declare that all people are created equal—gifted with unalienable rights like life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That bold spirit of freedom and hope continues to inspire us today, in every corner of Minnesota and across our nation."
She outlined several new laws that took effect on July 1. These include a requirement for venues with more than 100 attendees to provide free water and allow guests to bring sealed or empty bottles. Schwartz commented on this measure: "Heading to a concert or a big event? Venues with over 100 people are now required to provide free water—and you’re welcome to bring your own sealed or empty bottle. Cheers to staying refreshed and safe in our summer heat!"
On education funding, Schwartz noted Minnesota’s commitment of nearly $26 billion for schools over the next two years. She stated, "That means better resources for students, support for educators, and expanded opportunities to build a strong workforce. Plus, a $100 million investment will help school staff like paraprofessionals and bus drivers get summer unemployment benefits—they deserve it!"
Other legislative updates mentioned by Schwartz include making bass fishing legal year-round in Minnesota lakes; implementing stricter penalties for assaults against firefighters; strengthening efforts against wage theft; protecting children from fentanyl exposure; phasing out Stillwater prison while reinvesting in mental health and community programs; as well as introducing new measures aimed at fraud prevention within government spending.
Regarding public safety initiatives, she said: "We’re enacting tougher penalties for those who assault firefighters, enhancing tools to fight wage theft, and protecting kids from fentanyl exposure. We’ve also begun the careful phaseout of the Stillwater prison, reinvesting in mental health and community support programs."
Schwartz also pointed out that Castoroides ohioensis—a prehistoric giant beaver—has been named as Minnesota’s official state fossil.
The representative encouraged residents interested in further details about recent legislation to consult the full list available online.
In closing her message marking Independence Day celebrations across Minnesota communities, Schwartz wrote: "This Independence Day, let’s also honor the heroes among us: our veterans, peace officers, first responders, and everyday citizens who serve with courage and kindness. Their dedication reminds us that freedom requires vigilance and love—passed on from one generation to the next."
"Whether you’re watching fireworks light up the night sky, enjoying a backyard BBQ, or simply spending time with loved ones, I hope your holiday is filled with joy, gratitude, and pride in this beautiful country we call home," she added.
"Happy Independence Day! Let freedom ring!"
