Minnesota State Representative Erica Schwartz (R-North Mankato) provided an update on her recent activities at the Capitol, three weeks into the new Republican majority. Schwartz reported that legislative work is moving quickly and that she is focused on advancing policies to support Minnesotans.
Schwartz described a visit from Troy, the son of Representative Josh Heintzeman (R-Nisswa), who spent time observing House proceedings. She noted, “He might be little, but he was all ears, taking in everything happening around him like a pro. From big debates to important votes, Troy sat through it all like a champ—maybe even better than some of us!”
The representative also attended the Le Sueur County BPOU Convention over the weekend. She shared updates about bonding bills aimed at community investment and discussed local challenges and opportunities with attendees. “It’s always energizing to be in a room full of people who care deeply about the future of our state. We had great discussions about the challenges we’re facing, the opportunities ahead, and how we can work together to ensure our communities get the resources they need,” Schwartz said.
On Monday night, Schwartz participated in her first New Legislator Dinner alongside other first-year lawmakers. She emphasized the importance of building relationships across different backgrounds and districts: “There’s something special about sitting down with people who are all navigating this new journey together. We come from different backgrounds and districts, but at the end of the day, we’re all here to serve and make a difference.”
Schwartz welcomed students from Immanuel Lutheran School in Courtland for a Capitol tour that included explanations of legislative processes. She highlighted the significance of youth civic engagement: “We had a blast touring the Capitol, stopping in the House Chamber, and diving into how the legislative process works...it was a reminder of why civic engagement at a young age is so important.”
She also met with Blue Earth County Commissioners Vance Stuhrenberg and Deputy Administrator Josh Milow to discuss county governance issues. In addition, she spoke with members of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association regarding their industry’s role in Minnesota’s economy—Minnesota is recognized as a national leader in turkey production—and met with Teamsters Local 320 representatives about public workforce concerns.
Schwartz expressed strong support for House File 12 alongside Representative Peggy Scott (R-Andover), stating: “Protecting fairness in women’s sports isn’t just good policy, it’s common sense.” She cited advocacy by Riley Gaines—a 12-time NCAA All-American swimmer—as influential for this legislation: “Riley’s unwavering dedication to defending women’s sports is truly inspiring, and having her at the Capitol this Monday is a huge moment for Minnesota.”
In closing her update, Schwartz encouraged constituents to reach out with feedback or questions about district issues: “Your thoughts, concerns, and ideas help guide the work I do for our district...My office is here to serve you, and I’m always ready to listen.”
