Minnesota State Representative Erica Schwartz has provided an update to constituents in District 18A, highlighting recent developments at the state and local levels.
Schwartz noted that Senator Nicole Mitchell was recently found guilty on two felony counts: first-degree burglary and possession of burglary tools. "With the Senate’s razor-thin DFL majority (just one seat), her conviction has thrown everything into uncertainty, possibly triggering a 33–33 party split. Buckle up!" Schwartz wrote. The conviction could affect the balance of power in the Minnesota Senate.
Additionally, U.S. Senator Kelly Morrison stepped down, resulting in two Senate seats being open for a special election scheduled for November 4th. According to Schwartz, "Translation? The balance of power in the Senate just got a lot more interesting. Stay tuned!"
Security measures at the Capitol have also changed following several incidents, including an unauthorized entry by an individual claiming to be the governor. As of August 6th, most entrances are locked except for two doors on the south side during business hours. Security personnel are now stationed at these entrances while officials consider further changes such as metal detectors or bag checks. Schwartz stated, "While no one wants the Capitol to feel like an airport, we all agree it should be safe and secure for everyone—especially those who visit, work, and serve there."
Metro Transit will suspend Northstar Rail service by January 2026 due to high costs and low ridership. In its place, expanded bus service will begin on January 5, 2026. Schwartz credited House Transportation Chair Rep. Jon Koznick (R-Lakeville) and others for advocating this change: "Thanks to strong advocacy from House Transportation Chair Rep. Jon Koznick (R-Lakeville) and others, we’re finally seeing a shift toward more effective transit."
In district news, Schwartz attended Farmfest 2025 where she discussed support for farmers with members of the Minnesota Soybean Growers Association and highlighted House File 2665—a bill she authored allowing crude soybean oil transport under special overweight vehicle permits.
She also congratulated Tim and Mary Waibel along with their children Justin, Jonathan, Rebecca, Anna, and Clarissa on being named Nicollet County Farm Family of the Year for their contributions to agriculture since purchasing their land in 1990.
Schwartz described attending "Breakfast on the Farm," hosted by Blue Earth County Farm Bureau where she met local leaders including Kevin Papp and Princess Kay of the Milky Way.
She concluded her update expressing gratitude for community engagement over summer events: "Representing such a strong, grounded, and community-minded district is truly an honor!"
