House Republicans in Minnesota have introduced a new school safety agenda aimed at improving student security, expanding mental health support, and increasing accountability for violent offenders.
“Students deserve to learn in an environment where they feel safe and supported. Families deserve to know their children are protected while at school. This agenda provides concrete tools for schools to strengthen security, ensure access to mental health care, and hold violent offenders accountable so our communities can be safer for everyone,” Rep. Sexton stated.
The proposed measures include increased funding for school safety initiatives that would also extend to non-public schools. The agenda calls for the creation of school security grants through legislation such as the SHIELD Act (HF 15). It would give schools more flexibility in how they use funds for safety improvements and make School Resource Officers available to every school. Additionally, the plan seeks changes to current rules limiting doctors’ ability to use their medical judgment and aims to increase funding for mental health treatment beds.
