State Representative Joe Schomacker (R–Luverne), who serves as co-chair of the Human Services Committee, responded to a recent Kare 11 investigative report that detailed allegations of fraud and forged signatures within the Housing Stabilization Services (HSS) program. The HSS is a Medical Assistance benefit designed to help individuals with disabilities and seniors secure and maintain housing.
According to the Kare 11 investigation, one enrollee in the HSS program was billed for more than $14,000 in Medicaid claims between August 2023 and April 2024, even though they had no contact with a provider during that time. Another participant alleged that their signature was forged on a required housing consultation form.
In his statement, Schomacker said: “The allegations of fraud, forged signatures, and the theft of millions in taxpayer dollars outlined in this report are maddening. They highlight the urgent need for the Department of Human Services and lawmakers to continue working together to root out waste, fraud, and abuse, especially within the Housing Stabilization Services program.”
Schomacker added: “Minnesotans are generous people who want to help those in need. Unfortunately, it appears that we are once again being taken advantage of. Taxpayers have had enough. That’s why we are delivering real reforms in our budget bills that crack down on fraud and restore accountability in public programs.”
Kare 11 reported that the Minnesota Department of Human Services has launched investigations into several providers mentioned in its coverage as well as others.
