Rep. Tom Sexton, a Republican from Waseca, has issued a statement following the Minnesota Supreme Court’s recent decision regarding a powerlifting case. The ruling has drawn criticism from Sexton, who expressed concern for female athletes in Minnesota.

“Today’s ruling is deeply disappointing for the many young women who have worked hard to earn fair competition in their sports. Title IX was created to give girls equal opportunities, and that promise is being undermined when biological males are allowed to compete in girls’ divisions. This is about protecting fairness, safety, and the integrity of women’s athletics with a level playing field. I stand ready to support legislation that ensures girls’ sports remain for girls when the Legislature reconvenes next session,” said Sexton.

The decision comes amid ongoing debates over participation policies in school and amateur sports leagues across the country.
