The Republican Party of Minnesota agrees with the Senate’s recent decision to remove Commerce Commissioner Steve Kelley from his position.
“The Minnesota Senate’s job is to make sure the people the governor appoints to be commissioners are qualified and capable,” Minnesota GOP Chairwoman Jennifer Carnahan said in a release from the MNGOP. “The commissioner of the Commerce Department must be an expert in the insurance regulatory field and Steve Kelley doesn’t have that expertise. Steve Kelley’s focus while in the legislature was in education policy, energy policy and telecommunications policy. His lack of required knowledge was evident in his performance as commissioner.”
Kelley was criticized in August after he appealed Public Utilities Commission’s approval to replace Enbridge Energy‘s aging Line 3 pipeline, according to CBS Minnesota. Kelley said his decision was based on ensuring compliance with state statues.
CBS Minnesota reports the Minnesota Senate previously ousted Labor and Industry Commissioner Nancy Leppink.
